How do I know my registration was received?

A “Thank you for registering” message will appear on your screen and you will receive a confirmation e-mail. Please read the email carefully to verify that your registration was received correctly. The charge on your credit card will appear as “Active Transportation Alliance.”

Can I volunteer for the Four-Star Bike Tour?

The Four-Star Bike Tour needs volunteers in many capacities before, during and after the ride. Please visit our Four-Star Volunteering page to learn more and to sign up.

I’d like to ride a different route than the one I chose when I registered.

The route options on our sign-up form are for our planning purposes only. Feel free to ride whatever route you like—just make sure you’re there at the right start time.

I want to bring my child with me. Do I have to pay for him/her?

Our rule for the Four-Star Bike Tour is “If you pedal, you pay.” This means that children on their own bikes or those being pulled on a trail-a-bike must pay to ride. Children in trailers ride for free.

What about riding a tandem—do I have to pay for two people?

Our rule is, “If you pedal, you pay.” So, a tandem needs two paying riders, as does an adult rider with a child on a trail-a-bike. Children that are being pulled in a trailer or on a child’s seat on an adult’s bike do not need to pay.

Where does the ride start?

The ride starts and finishes at Morgan and Taylor streets on the University of Illinois-Chicago campus.

Why do I need my rider and helmet numbers?

Your rider and helmet numbers let event staff and volunteers know you are part of the ride.  Please have your number visible at all times so that staff and volunteers know that you are registered.  Your numbers are your ticket to get your T-shirt and access to the ride rest stops.  Also, we will be taking pictures of your ride, and your rider/helmet numbers will allow you to access your photos after the ride.

What do I need to bring the day of the ride?

  • Rider numbers and helmet (required)
  • Your driver’s license or ID and some cash
  • Water bottle, bike lock
  • Sunscreen, a spare inner tube, pump and tire levers
  • Extra snacks for yourself

Also recommended: snacks or foods for specific dietary needs, sunscreen, camera, a spare inner tube, pump and tire levers.

For safety purposes, we recommend you do not wear headphones. It is illegal to use cell phones while riding a bike.

What if it rains?

The Four-Star Bike Tour will be held rain or shine.

Can I get a refund?

Because proceeds from the Four-Star Bike Tour support the efforts of our non-profit organization, we do not offer refunds. Your investment in this event goes directly toward making Chicagoland a better place for people who bike, walk and take transit.

How much does it cost?

Registration for the Four-Star Bike Tour is $30 and $25 for Active Transportation Alliance members. Youth 17 and under pay $15. You can also save on registration while supporting a worthy non-profit; registration and an Active Trans membership is $50. Sign up by July 24 and save $5 on any registration. Sign up before Aug. 14 before prices go up $2 on all registrations.

Can my registration fee be deducted from my taxes?

Your registration for Four-Star Bike Tour is a donation that does not exceed the fair market value of the goods and services received; therefore, it is not eligible for a tax deduction. If you signed up for an Active Trans membership with your event registration, you may deduct $20, which is the value of the membership less the $10 value of the Chicagoland Bike Map. If you made a donation above your registration fee, you can deduct that amount. We recommend consulting a tax professional for additional guidance.
