We need your help for the 2011 Four Star Bike Tour on August 28, 2011, as thousands of bicyclists participate in one of Chicago’s longest-running rides.
Formerly known as the Boulevard Lakefront Tour, the Four Star Bike Tour returns on August 28 with four new routes highlighting some of Chicago’s historic parks and architecture! We hope you will help make this event a success by lending your skills and talents before, during and after the event.
Wednesday Volunteer Nights
Work with other volunteers at our office at 9 W. Hubbard St., Suite 402 to help prepare materials and supplies for the event. Meet on select Wednesday evenings to help process registrations, stuff envelopes, pack supplies and complete other tasks. Register early as space is limited!
Monday Registration Mailing Nights
Work with other volunteers at our offices at 9 W. Hubbard St., Suite 402 to help mail rider numbers and other materials to registered participants. Register early as space is limited!
Daytime Office Assistance
Work with the event staff the week preceding the Four-Star Bike Tour at our offices at 9 W. Hubbard St., Suite 402. Help enter paper registrations, pack boxes and prepare supplies for the event. Register early as space is limited!
Packet Pickup
Help distribute T-shirts and rider numbers to participants from our downtown office at 9 W. Hubbard St, Suite 402 during day and evening hours, Wednesday, August 24 through Saturday, August 27. Register early as space is limited!
Event Setup
Help us setup for the big day. We need your help on August 27 to load the trucks at our offices at 9 W. Hubbard St, Suite 402, transport supplies to the event start/finish area, set up tables and chairs, hang banners and signs, and do odd jobs. Some heavy lifting required.
Signage Team
Hang signs along the routes so riders know where to go and/or collect signs after the ride. Signage volunteers are asked to provide either their own bike trailer or vehicle to transport signs and equipment. Signage will be put up on Saturday, August 27, and then taken down on Sunday, August 28. You will be able to ride the day of the event for free!
Route Markers
Teams of volunteers are needed to mark the routes about one week before the event. All supplies and instructions will be provided. Route marking happens in the night hours. We’d especially appreciate help from volunteers that can bring bike trailers.
Rest stops and water stops
Help setup one of our rest or water stops and hand out snacks and water to riders who are stopping for a quick break. Assist with teardown after your rest or water stop closes.
Ride Marshals (medic & repair)
Ride Marshals keep the ride safe, well organized and fun for all participants. Cyclists experienced in bike repair or are medically trained are needed to patrol the route and change flats, make adjustments, attend to minor injuries and help Course Marshals direct the ride. Ride Marshals are chosen based on experience and must be fully self sufficient out on the course. Ride Marshals will be provided with patch kits and tire levers. Ride Marshals must supply their own pump, allen wrenches, and all supplies necessary to be completely self sufficient—including screw drivers, tire pressure gauge, spoke wrench, crank wrench and chain tool.
Course Marshals
Course Marshals are the heart of the Four Star Bike Tour! Volunteers staff intersections along the route to direct and cheer on riders. Critical intersections may not always be busy with participant traffic, so bring your lawn chair, radio and snacks and turn it into a party with other volunteers!
SAG Drivers
We need safe SAG (support and gear) drivers to pick up cyclists whose bikes quit on them. We will even help supply the car if you don’t have one. Only safe drivers need apply. SAG drivers must submit a driver’s license and proof of insurance.
Reunion Team
Join our crew who reunites lost riders with the rest of their party. We are seeking mobile and stationary members for this team. Medical experience or experience working with children is a plus.
Festival
Help our participants enjoy the Four-Star Bike Tour experience at our festival. Volunteers are needed to help with final setup duties, t-shirt and rider number distribution, day-of registration, merchandise sales, and more!
Event Teardown
Help us put all of our supplies away at the end of the day. We’ll load our trucks with the supplies from the event, bring the trucks back to the Active Transportation Alliance offices at 9 W. Hubbard St. and unload them.
Group Volunteering
Active Trans offers a $150 donation for charitable or community organizations that provide groups of 15 or more volunteers for the day of the event. Groups are urged to register early because space is limited! Contact Nora at 312.427.3325 x285 or e-mail Nora@activetrans.org to confirm. Qualify for the donation by completing a group contact sheet by the deadline and having at least one group member attend a volunteer training session.
